Steelers Land $118M Pro Bowl QB as Aaron Rodgers Backup Plan
The Pittsburgh Steelers They need to address their quarterback situation sometime during this off-season. The squad selected Ohio State’s playmaker Will Howard in the sixth round of the 2025 NFL Draft, however, the 23-year-old is not prepared for starting duties just yet and requires more development time.
The Steelers continue their quest for Aaron Rodgers, yet the 41-year-old might decide to retire rather than join Pittsburgh and play an additional season.
If Rodgers leaves them behind, Steelers Wire's Andrew Vasquez encourages Pittsburgh to focus on signing free-agent quarterback Ryan Tannehill.
"Since 2023, Ryan Tannehill has not been part of an NFL roster; however, he continues to be among the top unrestricted free-agent quarterbacks. In the ideal scenario, this ex-Titans quarterback might challenge Mason Rudolph for the starting position. Conversely, he would make an exceptional backup with the potential to coach sixth-round pick QB Will Howard," Vasquez noted.
Since the 2023 season, Tannehill has not taken a single snap of football. In that season, he began by starting six games for the Titans but had to sit out due to an injury and was replaced by Will Levis. Despite this, he concluded the season as Tennessee’s starter in their last few matches; however, the team decided not to keep him when the 2024 offseason rolled around.
While playing for the Titans, Tannehill emerged as a reliable quarterback, guiding the team to numerous victories. After orchestrating Tennessee’s run to the AFC Championship Game in 2019, he earned the AP Comeback Player of the Year honor. He further supported Coach Mike Vrabel in securing back-to-back AFC South titles in 2020 and 2021.
Should Tannehill remain determined to continue his playing career, the Steelers might present themselves as an option for this previous Pro Bowl athlete. With few remaining choices at the quarterback position, Pittsburgh may need to explore all possibilities, particularly if Rodgers decides to retire.
Even though he wasn’t part of a roster last year, Tannehill might still provide one more season of reliable performance and could serve as an adequate backup quarterback for the Steelers. Clearly, bringing aboard the 2012 eighth-overall selection made by the Miami Dolphins would likely be seen as a final-option acquisition by General Manager Omar Khan.
