Leverkusen's Wirtz: Ready to Step Out of My Comfort Zone
Bayern Munich has sparked transfer rumors after Bayer Leverkusen's Florian Wirtz showed interest in potentially joining their ranks.
"The idea of venturing out of my comfort zone and exploring something fresh really attracts me," the 22-year-old playmaker stated in an interview with Sports Illustrated.
I am familiar with football changing rooms and I strongly believe that I could adapt quickly wherever I end up.
Wirtz stressed that he holds "utmost respect" for athletes who "abandon their loved ones and familiar surroundings for the sake of their profession."
I feel incredibly fortunate to have numerous top-notch clubs just steps away from where I live and now get to play for one of the finest teams in both Germany and Europe," Wirtz said, noting that he moved to Leverkusen from neighboring Cologne when he was 16.
As reported by the German publication Bild, Wirtz told his coach Xabi Alonso that he is unwilling to transfer to Real Madrid or Manchester City, and desires a move solely to Bayern Munich, who have recently taken over as Bundesliga champions from Leverkusen.
The possibility of a potential move remains flexible. However, the German player is still under contract with Bayer Leverkusen until 2027.
As per Wirtz, financial factors have a minimal impact on transfers.
Absolutely, securing a solid contract is crucial," stated Wirtz. "However, from my standpoint, the athletic aspect holds greater significance than financial considerations.
When he relocated from Cologne, he hadn’t spent even a moment thinking about his Leverkusen salary.
If Wirtz joins Bayern during the transfer window, he will essentially take over Thomas Müller's pivotal role at the reigning German champions.
The player, who is 35 years old, departs following an impressive run of 13 Bundesliga championships. Former German national teammate Robin Gosens has encouraged the striker to join him at Fiorentina.
"I believe the passionate football supporters in Italy would embrace him warmly. Tuscany boasts stunning beauty. Delicious cuisine, dear Thomas, along with plenty of sunlight. Thus, it would undoubtedly make for an exciting venture," Gosens stated to the TV networks RTL/ntv.
