NFL Analyst Reveals Why Will Howard Slipped to the Steelers in Round 6

The Pittsburgh Steelers They might have come across a gem in the sixth round of the 2025 NFL Draft, where their team utilized the No. 185 overall selection on Ohio State’s quarterback, Will Howard.

The 23-year-old posted a magical 2024 campaign at Ohio State, raising his draft stock by tossing 35 touchdowns to ten interceptions and leading the Buckeyes to a National Championship win over Notre Dame.

Howard showed potential for the higher league and was among the top quarterbacks nationally last year. Nonetheless, he fell to Round 6 and became the eighth QB selected. The 33rd Squad's Steve Palazzolo might have exposed the cause behind why numerous squads overlooked Howard prior to Pittsburgh signing him near the end of Day 3.

"I don't know if there's anything specific fatally as far as the flaw, it's just inconsistency," Palazzolo said during an appearance on 93.7 The Fan. The description for [Jalen] Milroe could also apply here. There were instances where his accuracy varied significantly from game to game. He often throws passes too far downfield towards the center of the field several times per match, which appears to happen frequently. While his throwing ability isn’t bad, it’s not impressive either; many have claimed he has a strong arm, yet this doesn’t seem to hold true. His performance is adequate at best, and when comparing his athletic abilities, they’re somewhat akin to those of an inferior version of Daniel Jones.

Though Howard's accuracy was inconsistent at times during his collegiate career, the Kansas State transfer still completed 73% of his passes during the 2024 season and ran an efficient offense under Ryan Day.

Clearly, Howard remains a developing talent who could benefit from more seasoning, ideally under the guidance of an established veteran. Nonetheless, his promise suggests he might be Pittsburgh’s long-term solution at quarterback, and things appear promising for him so far.

Howard's mom told Devon Jackson from the Inquirer The new quarterback requested the playbook from Steelers quarterbacks coach Tom Arth the day following his draft selection.

Maureen, Howard’s mother, told Jackson that '[Arth] replied to [Will], saying, 'We initially planned to give you the weekend off, but this is precisely why we chose you, due to the type of worker you are,'” she recounted.
