Arne Søtun Reveals Club Poised to Challenge Liverpool for Premier League Crown

Arne Slot acknowledges he anticipated more significant rivalry in the Premier League with Liverpool 15 points ahead of their closest competitor.

Liverpool beat Chelsea 2-1 that day However, Slot believed his squad was outperformed at Anfield and concluded that the western London club were legitimate contenders for the championship after seeing the outcome.

Chelsea were one of the stand-out teams in England in the first-half of the season but have slipped to fifth in the Premier League – 19 points behind Liverpool – following a huge drop-off in the second-half of the campaign.

Nevertheless, they have clinched three consecutive victories following their win against Liverpool as they aim to secure a top-five spot in the Premier League and earn qualification for next season’s Champions League.

When asked if he anticipates Chelsea challenging Liverpool for the title next season, Slot responded, "I thought they would pose a threat this year."

'They outperformed us at Anfield; they came very close to us. It was entirely unexpected for me that we would end up 18 points ahead of them because I never felt like that during our match.'

‘But it tells you probably how well we did if a team like this, with so much quality in the squad, we can go clear of them. It is a big compliment for our players. Chelsea have so many quality players.’

Slot added: 'They posed a significant danger during counters, yet they possess an excellent squad. Very well structured with numerous outstanding players.'

'It will always be a challenging match to play here, but how we performed indicates both our success in winning the league and the fact that even minor lapses in the attacking area can lead to conceding goals or failing to score.'

‘A wise man once said to me ‘nothing good comes from losing a football game’ and that’s how we experience it.

‘Yes, we slipped twice with a goals conceded, but the amount of times we could play through Chelsea was much more than half a season ago.

'In the last part of the game, we weren’t as aggressive, and we lacked a bit more to find the back of the net.'

Chelsea boss Maresca, meanwhile, said: ‘Very important three points, especially at this stage in the season.

'This squad [Liverpool] demonstrated precisely why they excel. They made us retreat into our own half defensively, which isn't ideal for us.'

'We designed the match to be intense, sticking to our intended strategy, but they pushed us into adopting a new approach. Our team adjusted remarkably well. Considering the numerous opportunities we generated, we truly merited winning the game.'

'We hadn't intended to sit back and absorb pressure, but they pushed us into that position, which demonstrated why they clinched the Premier League title as they are indeed a formidable team.'
