Yamal Flourishes as Barcelona's Champions League Hopes Dwindle in Semifinals

BARCELONA, Spain (AP) — With nearly six minutes of added time showing on the clock, Lamine Yamal advanced towards the penalty box carrying the ball, facing just the goalkeeper between him and the goal.

The young star faced a challenge from a defender, yet seemed well-placed to score.

Rather than netting the goal that could have propelled Barcelona to their first Champions League final in ten years, Yamal only managed a feeble left-footed attempt which ended up directly in the gloves of Inter Milan’s goalkeeper Yann Sommer.

The young Spanish forward, just 17 years old, put in another impressive display on Tuesday, generating opportunities and consistently posing a danger, yet it was insufficient to guide the Catalan team to their inaugural Champions League final in ten years.

Yamal's lost chance as time ran out turned out to be expensive, keeping the score tied at 3-3 before Inter Milan took over. prevailed 4-3 in extra time to progress to the final with an aggregate score of 7-6.

Yamal had scored an incredible goal in the initial game in Barcelona, but failed to find the back of the net during the rematch in San SIro, which didn't aid Barcelona.

A further attempt from the left foot during extra time seemed hopeful, but Sommer managed to make a barely-there save, keeping the score at 4-3.

Which save will I recall?" asked Sommer, named the game’s most valuable player. "Perhaps the final one against Lamine Yamal. He's an exceptional player, and luckily for us, his attempt missed. Numerous teams might have conceded defeat when trailing 3-2, yet we persevered and ultimately turned things around.

Sommer was talking to Sky Italia, with quotations featured by UEFA.

Sommer had previously executed several crucial stops against Yamal throughout the game, notably making a spectacular one-handed dive to save a powerful shot from the young striker at the 77-minute mark when the score was tied 2-2.

Yamal's chance to take advantage late in the game arrived just moments following Inter's equalizer scored by Francesco Acerbi. Earlier, in the 87th minute, Raphinha had given Barcelona the lead, continuing the teams' tradition of exciting encounters.

Yamal seemed stunned as he failed to send the ball past Sommer. Once the referee signaled the end of regular time with a whistle, Yamal momentarily lifted his shirt to cover his face.

Qualifying for the finals would have further enhanced Yamal's remarkable beginning to his career, not only with Barcelona but also with Spain’s national squad, where he has been breaking records and receiving accolades worldwide in the football community.

Barcelona aimed to make it to the finals for the first time since they claimed their fifth UEFA Champions League trophy in 2015.
