Raiders Unveil Plans for Rookie Tommy Mellott: The Next Julian Edelman?

If you pay attention to what the Las Vegas Raiders say, it sounds like they managed to snag one of the top talents available in the draft with their sixth-round pick.

Certainly, that would resonate with the team's well-known minority owner, Tom Brady.

However, let me clarify, we are discussing Tommy Mellott, who excelled as a quarterback for Montana State at the FCS level.

The college scouting director for the Raiders, Brandon Yeargan, addressed this issue. Las Vegas Review-Journal to outline Mellott's expectations.

“I wouldn’t categorize him just yet,” Yeargan stated. “We see him primarily as a receiver who will bring significant value to our kicking game. He could also be a potential return specialist, contribute as a coverage player, and perhaps even step into playing quarterback. We’re considering him more as an athletic receiver, but he’s quite distinctive.”

In the sixth round, the Raiders selected their long-term quarterback four picks later than Mellott, choosing Cam Miller from North Dakota State.

Mellott has drawn comparisons to Julian Edelman, partly because of his link with Brady. Similar to Edelman, who started as a quarterback for Kent State before becoming one of the NFL’s premier slot receivers, Mellott has shown versatility in his playing style.

Even if Mellott only partially represents what Edelman stands for, he makes a solid choice for the Raiders.

If he manages to reach that caliber? Las Vegas would be thrilled.
