Bears' Trade Decision for Cole Kmet Makes Sense Post-NFL Draft
The Chicago Bears stunned many by selecting the player at the No. 10 spotOverall in the 2025 NFL Draft.
By making that selection, they drafted Michigan tight end Colston Loveland. He now adds depth to a position group that already features the seasoned Cole Kmet.
Pro Football Network's Sterling Xie believes that suggests a potential trade involving Kmet could be imminent.
This is how Xie clarifies things:
Following an offensively focused free agency and trading window, the Chicago Bears kept building up their offensive lineup in Benjamin Nelson's initial draft. Colston Loveland The tenth overall selection sees Chicago choosing the top-ranked tight end available, offering them aTE prospect who boasts significant receiving potential along with substantial experience within Michigan’s advanced pro-style offensive scheme.
This brings up several inquiries regarding Cole Kmet 's future. On one hand, the Lions used multi-tight end sets at the seventh-highest rate last season (42.5%). It's entirely possible Johnson intends to pair Loveland and Kmet together and play both significant snaps. However, the Bears also drafted receiver Luther Burden III In the subsequent round, they possess an array of seasoned wide receivers that might enable Chicago to utilize 11 personnel more effectively than in the previous year.
Kmet probably ranks no higher than fourth in the receiving hierarchy and might drop to fifth based on how Burden progresses. If traded after June 1st, the deal would free up $10 million for the Bears' salary cap, with only minimal dead money—$1.6 million per year over the coming three seasons. Given he still has three years under contract, the 26-year-old Kmet could provide significant value as part of an exchange should Chicago decide to move him.

Loveland and Kmet may not be the same type of tight ends, which could justify retaining both players.
However, there's also the challenge of optimizing an entire team roster, and possessing two top-tier tight ends could be seen as an excessive luxury.
The Bears team features second-year quarterback Caleb Williams and first-year head coach Ben Johnson.
If they aim to extend those deadlines, and believe Kmet fits well with their plans, he should remain part of the team. However, if they see greater potential down another path, now might be the moment to consider trading Kmet and wholeheartedly backing Loveland instead.
